The most familiar body fat percentage chart is the five-category classification used by the American Council on Exercise. It splits body fat by sex, with every category sitting higher for women because women carry more essential fat for hormonal and reproductive function.

Essential fat is the floor the body needs for hormone production, organ protection, and temperature regulation. Sustained levels below it can disrupt hormonal and immune function, and for women, extended periods below roughly 17 percent can affect menstrual function.
This chart has one significant gap: it does not account for age. A healthy percentage at 25 and a healthy percentage at 65 are not the same number, and a chart that treats them as identical will misclassify a lot of people. The next two sections fill that gap.
Healthy body fat percentage by age and sex
The most rigorous attempt to define healthy body fat by age comes from Gallagher and colleagues, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Rather than picking cutoffs by opinion, they measured body fat in 1,626 adults using reference methods, then worked out which body fat percentages corresponded to the body mass index thresholds that the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization already use for underweight, overweight, and obesity. If you have been looking for a healthy body fat percentage for men or for women specifically, this is the table that answers it, because it separates both variables at once. A man at 22 percent is above the healthy range at 30 and inside it at 65. The same shift applies to women, roughly three percentage points across the adult lifespan.
Two honest caveats. The authors call these provisional ranges and say plainly that a single universal set cannot be established without further work, so they orient rather than diagnose. And the sample was recruited through advertisements and referrals rather than drawn from the general population. This is educational information, not a substitute for a clinician's read on your own result.
A category is also only half of what most people want. Knowing you are inside a healthy band does not tell you whether you are near the top or the bottom of it. These values come from Imboden and colleagues, who compiled 3,327 whole-body DXA scans from two university exercise physiology laboratories and published percentiles by decade for both sexes. [3]
One point matters before you read the tables, because it runs opposite to intuition: a higher percentile means less body fat. Sitting at the 90th percentile means you are leaner than roughly 90 percent of people your age and sex. The 10th percentile column holds the highest fat values.

Set these against the healthy ranges above and something becomes obvious. The average body fat percentage in this sample sits above the guideline-linked healthy range in almost every age band, for both sexes. That is not an error in either dataset. The guideline ranges describe what the evidence links to good health; the percentiles describe what people actually carry, and the population has been getting heavier. Comparing yourself to the average tells you where you stand among your peers, which is a different and less useful question than whether your number supports your health.
The sample was 95 percent white, drawn from two university laboratories rather than a national survey, and measured on GE DXA systems. The authors are explicit that the values are not interchangeable with those from other DXA manufacturers and may not represent every population.

Take a man who measures 25 percent body fat and read him against both datasets at three different ages.

The measurement never changed. At 25 he is carrying more fat than most men his age and sits at a threshold worth acting on. At 65 the identical result puts him among the leaner fifth of his peers while still sitting slightly above the guideline range. Any chart that gives one answer for both men is giving at least one of them the wrong answer.
Why healthy body fat rises with age
Body fat climbs with age for a specific reason: skeletal muscle declines, and fat tends to replace it, so the same body weight contains a different mix. In the DXA reference data, median body fat rose about 2 percent per decade from the twenties through the fifties in both sexes, with the largest single jump, around 5 percent, between the twenties and the thirties. From 60 onward the median changed by less than 1 percent per decade. [3]
What is happening underneath the number matters more than the number. Muscle and fat move in opposite directions, which is why body fat percentage is worth reading alongside skeletal muscle mass rather than on its own. Where the fat sits matters too, and visceral fat around the organs carries more cardiometabolic risk than fat stored elsewhere. Two people can share a body fat percentage and have meaningfully different health profiles.
Why body fat percentage beats BMI
BMI uses only height and weight, so it cannot separate fat from muscle. A muscular person can land in the overweight or obese BMI category with low body fat, while someone at an ordinary weight with little muscle can carry an unhealthy amount of fat. Researchers who compared DXA measurements against BMI in the same people found exactly that pattern of misclassification in both directions. [3]
